Getting Started
Getting Started
Starting therapy doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Here’s exactly what to expect.
The Free 15-Minute Call
The free consultation call is just a conversation. It’s not an intake, it’s not a session, and there’s no commitment.
It’s a chance for you to:
- Share what's going on in a low-pressure setting
- Ask any questions you have
- Get a sense of whether working together feels like a fit
Most people leave the call feeling like they can breathe a little easier — because they’ve taken the step.
Ready to reach out?
You don’t have to have everything figured out before reaching out. That’s what we’re here for.
We’ll respond within 1–2 business days.
Your First Session
First sessions look a little different depending on who we’re working with.
For Adults
Your first session is about getting to know each other. I'll ask about what brought you in, what you're hoping for, and a bit about your background. There's no agenda beyond starting to understand your situation. You don't need to have anything prepared.
For Children
The first session is typically with parents only. We'll talk about what you're observing, what you're worried about, and what you'd like to see change. This conversation helps me understand your child before we meet, and helps you understand how play therapy works. Your child's first session will come next.
For Teens
The first session is with the teen. I'll explain how confidentiality works, make sure they understand what therapy is (and isn't), and start building rapport. Parents are welcome to participate briefly at the start if helpful — but teen sessions are teen-led.
For Families
The first session is typically the whole family together. We'll establish ground rules for the space and begin to map the patterns and dynamics that are most affecting you.
In-Person or Telehealth
In-Person
Available at our Flagstaff, AZ office. Serving Flagstaff and Northern Arizona. Office address available upon scheduling.
Telehealth
Available to all Arizona residents via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Telehealth is just as effective as in-person for most issues and offers flexibility if distance, transportation, or schedule makes in-office visits difficult.
A Note About Fees
Please contact us for current fee information.
JEM Counseling is currently out-of-network with insurance providers. This means you pay directly for sessions, and we can provide a superbill — an itemized receipt — for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Whether and how much your insurance reimburses will depend on your specific plan. Contact us if you'd like to discuss further.
A limited number of sliding-scale spots are available. Please reach out to discuss your situation — we'll do our best to find something that works.
